Indian Operating Systems | Operating System-BharOS & BOSS

Indian Operating System

BharOS an Operating System for Mobile

BharOS is an operating system developed for mobile by J and K Operations Private Limited under the aegis of IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation, a non-profit organization established by IIT Madras. It is based on Android open-source project. It is an Indian Government funded project for use in government and public systems. In other word BharOS is a Linux-Kernel based operating system quite similar to Android with some differences. It is initially released on 24 January 2023.

Some advantages of this system are as follows:

  • It is not pre-installed with any application. Therefore, user is free to download the trusted applications from private application store services (PASS). It does not include google services.
  • It supports Over the Air (OTA) updating technology. OTA means Over the Air Technology to update installed software, firmware and software bugs instantly wirelessly. This is the efficient way to upgrade a system sitting at one place instead of going individually to update the system. It is also convenient for end user because it prevents them from having to go to a physical store or connect to a PC to update their devices.

BharOS is not readily available but it can be installed on commercial off-the-shelf handsets. The availability and use of BharOS in handset are still unknown.  But India has come one step forward by developing such an operating system.

BOSS an Operating System for Desktop Computer

Do you know BharOS is not only the alone operating system developed by India. India had also developed the Computer Operating system known as BOSS.

Bharat Operating System Solutions, commonly referred to as BOSS, is a group of several Open Source operating system derivatives, all of which are developed by CDAC, Chennai in order to benefit the usage of Free/Open Source Software in India. It is based on Debian Universal Operating System. BOSS initial released date is 10 January 2007 but its latest version 9.0, code name Urja released on 19 February 2021.

There are many version of BOSS software is available: Starting from Sethu, Tarang(1.0), Anant(2.0), Tejas(3.0), Savir(4.0), Anokha(5.0), Anoop(6.0), Drishti(7.0), Unnati (8.0) and Urja (9.0)

C-DAC created the GNU/Linux distribution Bharat Operating System Solutions (BOSS) to promote the usage of Free/Open Source Software across India. As more people now have access to software in their native language to use the Internet and other information and communications technology (ICT) resources, the availability of BOSS Linux will positively affect India's digital divide.

In this way Indian Government is taking steps to strengthen the software industry of India.
