Computer and Mobile Induced Diseases

Technology has given us computer and mobile and both play a pivotal role in developing human being. Mobile is work like computer nowadays and no field is exempt from the influence of computers. The majority of us spend a significant amount of time using computers/ mobiles every day. Due to spending of most of the time on computer / mobile, we are more susceptible to several illnesses, some of which may be fatal, due to our excessive use. Let's therefore have a look at a few ailments that can harm our health if we use them quite often.

 Carpel Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) : Pain in hand and wrist

It causes pain in hands and wrist. This disease happens due to lot of typing, continuous stress, long hours of using mouse and restrictive movements of hands. Basically it happens due to pressure on the median nerve. The median nerve helps to move your wrist, forearm, hand and fingers.

Precaution: 

  • Gently bend your arm and wrist after every 30 minutes.
  • Use wrist-rest to support your wrist
  • Keep your keyboard is at the same level or lowers than your elbow.

Asthenopia:  Fatigue of Eyes

This problem leads to several types of problems such as headache, pain around the eyes, double vision, sensitivity to light and fatigue. This happens due to continuous staring at the computer screen for long hours. Working up to long hours on computer may cause this problem to arise.  Looking continuously at a computer screen cause dry eye which result in itchy, sore and even the illusion of something struck in the eye. It comes under computer vision syndrome also call Digital Eye Strain.

Precaution: 

  • Use good quality monitors
  • Look at other objects that at varied distance every now and then
  • Take short breaks
  • Limit screen time

Musculoskeletal Pain  :  Back shoulder & neck pain

Long hours work on computer puts a lot of stress on your shoulder and neck.  You feel moderate to extreme pain in your back and neck. It can be happen due to poor sitting posture or inferior quality chair.  It is come under musculoskeletal problems. Musculoskeletal system includes your bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons and connective tissues. Feeling of extreme or mild pain in these parts is called musculoskeletal pain.

Precaution: 

  • Take frequent break to stretch your back and neck and shoulders.
  • Use a recline chair having 25 or 30 degree reclining capacity. 

Macular Degeneration: Eye Problem

Excessive screen usage and exposure to blue light accelerate the development of age related macular degeneration (AMD). High screen use is a condition called computer vision syndrome (CVS) there are multiple symptoms including:  Blurred vision, Headaches, Dry & red eyes, Pain in shoulder and neck. It happens when macula the part of retina that helps us to see clearly starts getting thinner as we age.

Precaution:                     

  • Make sure to rest your eyes. Use 20-20-20 guideline- Every 20 min look at an object 20 ft or more away for 20 second only.
  • Blink often to keep your eyes from dry out. 

Game Addiction: Inability to control emotions 

Gaming is a wonderful way of entertainment but if it becomes addiction, it increases the risk of physical and psychological health problems. Children are more prone to games but it is not untouched field by anyone. Games are good for a change from a continuous job or work but over indulgence of game lead to many problems like –lack of attention in other work; always think about game and improper growth of mind.

One of the major drawbacks of video games is that it might make it difficult for you to control your emotions. It results in an inability to control and manage their emotions, such as grief, fear, or other emotions like anger.

Precaution:

  • Indulge in other physical activity
  • Take adequate break
  • Sitting at a reasonable distance from screen.
  • Set time limits for play and stick to them. 

Earphones / Earbuds : Ear Infection / Listening problem

Earphones/ Earbuds are directly plugged into the ear canal and block the air passage. This can invite ear infections.  Use it sensibly not for extended periods of time.

Loud music played through earphones can damage the cells in the ear. The biggest concern is that these cells don’t have the ability to regenerate. 

Earphone is good for listening music or watching movie etc. for a short period of time. Always avoid using earphone in busy market area because it can be the cause of accident.

Earbuds fit right next to the eardrum so earbuds are especially harmful. Whenever possible, choose over-the-ear headphones.

Precaution:

  • Turn down volume
  • Use headphone instead of ear buds

Avoid using earphone or earbuds in crowd or traffic area.
By adhering to the 60/60 regulations, you can safeguard your ear. This suggests that you should try to listen to music for no longer than 60 minutes at a volume of 60%.

Texting Teen Tendonitis :  Pain  in Hands, back & Neck

Excess messaging can lead to Texting Teen Tendonitis (TTT). It causes pain in the hands, back, and neck due to poor posture. It is common practice among youngsters to use their phone for texting enormously sitting in any position they like. 

This habit bring texting teen tendonitis problem in youngsters because it is a repetitive motion of thumbs from texting on a cell phone. Tendonitis is generally the inflammation of tendon due to excessive texting.

Precaution:

  • Do not indulge in texting for long hours.

Sleep disturbances :  Insomnia 

The blue light emitted by your cell phone or laptop screen restrains the production of melatonin, the hormone that controls your sleep-wake cycle called circadian rhythm. A circadian rhythm is a natural internal process that regulates the sleep-wake cycle and happens every 24 hours on average.

Precaution:

  • Stop using digital devices 2 to 3 hours before going to bed.
  • Use night light mode in Windows.
