What is Operating System Maya?

The Maya operating system has been developed in India. It is based on UBUNTU," a popular Linux system that employs free and open-source technologies. The Indian Ministry of Defence has taken this endeavour to secure its computer systems against unforeseen, vulnerable Cyberattacks that may cause minor to severe disruptions to our internal systems. It was designed with an easy and error-free transition from Windows OS to Maya OS in mind.

Its interface and functionalities are quite similar to those of the Windows system, thus switching from Windows to Maya would be seamless.

Maya OS also has a feature called Chakravyuh, which is end-point anti-malware and antivirus software that prevents system hacking. As the name implies, it might be a multi-layer system that protects the system from digital threats.

Its development began in 2021, following a series of cyberattacks on India's crucial information and military systems.  India recognises the importance of developing a robust operating system to ward off these vulnerable attacks that not only disrupt the system but also leak vital and sensitive information. The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), and the National Informatics Centre (NIC) collaborated to create this operating system.

This operating system is unique in that it has been developed in six months only.

What exactly is Ubuntu?

Ubuntu is a well-known operating system that can be found on computers, servers, and other devices. It is based on the Linux operating system, which is open source software that anybody can use and modify.

India is a little late in establishing this system, whereas our neighbouring CHINA is using its own indigenously built system, Kylin OS for more than a decade. But, as the saying goes, "Better Late Than Never."  India initiate is commendable.

Benefits of MAYA OS

  • It is compatible with popular apps such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, and AutoCAD, which are widely used by businesses.
  • It has advanced features such as cloud storage, encryption, digital signatures, and biometric authentication, which improves both security and functionality.
  • It includes Chakravyuh, which is end-point anti-malware and antivirus software that prevents system hacking.
There is ample technological expertise in India, but the difficulty is relentless direction and dedication.

 Challenges for Operating System MAYA 
  • Keeping the operating system's security patches up to date.
  • Creating a comparable level of cyber resilience for OS Maya may necessitate equivalent efforts and resources.
  • To upgrade the operating system in response to changing infrastructure and use cases.
